Get back to business with Thermal Technology

Could using thermal camera technology help businesses ensure the safety of visitors and employees?

As businesses start to plan for the future they are having to think about what processes to put into place, not just for the recent Covid-19 outbreak but for potential virus threats in the future. One existing technology that could be used is the use of thermal camera technology.
Businesses are starting to look at thermal camera technology as a way to get back to normal and limit risk in the future.  Putting systems in place to protect staff and customers is an excellent way to future proof customer care, in relation to any virus threat.

Public spaces have a long history of using this technology. Airports have been using thermal camera technology since the SARS outbreak in 2002 and still do today,  places like train stations, factories and concerts have also use thermal imaging camera systems as an early warning system, as it is faster than checking each person individually with a hand held device.

The thermal devices record like a normal video camera but track heat and can even work in the dark. These cameras show hotter objects looking brighter and are very sensitive in measuring temperatures down to a fraction of a degree Fahrenheit.

Can thermal cameras be used to detect a virus or an infection?

The quick answer to this question is no, but thermal imaging cameras can be used to detect elevated body temperature and is an excellent way to quickly screen employees and customers. Although it won’t pick up a specific virus, it will indicate anyone that is giving off a hotter trace than everyone else.

A persons temperature might be affected by a hot beverage or recent exercise, so the need for a second temperature reading after a short period of time would be needed to check the initial reading. Although there are limitations it is a good use of technology as an early indicator for groups of people, while keeping the flow of people moving and would offer a confidence for your  staff or visitors.

What types of businesses can use thermal camera technology?

Basically any place with a flow of people, queues or crowds. Places of business, educational institutions, places of worship, doctors, dentists, leisure centres and leisure facilities such as cinemas, jump in parks and soft play areas. Basically anywhere people congregate or visit en masse to use facilities. By installing a simple thermal camera you can give your customers and staff the confidence to return to daily routines and enjoy your services.
